It’s no secret that Hong Kong is one of the most expensive cities in the world. You can easily spend $100 USD on a meal for two at a trendy restaurant and while I love doing that once in a while, it’s certainly not something I can afford to do on a weekly basis.
Having lived in Hong Kong for almost 3 years, my husband and I are at a “been there, done that” kind of phase where we gravitate towards the simpler things. A walk in the park, sunset watching near the harbour, a coffee date… Those things that help us connect after a hectic week and ironically cost almost nothing.
I decided to share some of our favourite & affordable date ideas that hopefully inspire you to spend more quality time with your loved one and are easily replicable no matter where you live.
Prosecco in the park
Grab a bubbly, some strawberries and head over your favourite park. Enjoy a conversation while recharging on some vitamin D. Our go-to picnic spot here in HK is the Cyberport Waterfront Park 🙂
Tram Date
Create your own version of hop-on-hop-off bus/tram and discover new places in the city! The key is not to plan too much and make it spontaneous. We came across super cool cafes and restaurants this way that we otherwise wouldn’t know about. Hong Kong tram tickets are extremely cheap (less than US$0.5 a ride)!

Flower Market
Ok, so I’m not sure if this would be a guy’s favourite but its definitely one romantic date idea for us ladies. You can grab together some succulents to decorate your home and hopefully your man will take the hint and get you some beautiful flowers! My all-time favourite Flower Market is the one near Prince Edward MTR.
Nature (Beach, Hiking, etc)
I love love love a day at the beach or hiking. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that whenever my husband and I are in the nature, we connect on a deeper level and have meaningful conversations about life, dreams and our future. That’s the power of nature. There’s so many options in Hong Kong, but my ultimate favourite one is Tai Long Wan in Sai Kung, which is the perfect mix of hiking + beach.
What are some of your favourite date ideas? I’d love to know!
