Today I’m taking you guys to the next leg of our Mexico trip (if you haven’t checked out my Tulum guide, you can find it here).
After 4 days in Tulum, we took the local bus towards Valladolid and I have to say this town was such a beautiful surprise. We only decided to make a stopover here for 2 nights as it was a good middle point between Tulum and Chitchen Itza. We had very low expectations as this town does not get as much hype as Maya Riviera (Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, etc), but we were impressed by the whimsical, relaxed and authentic Mexican vibe of the place.
If you decide to make a quick stop in Valladolid (which I recommend you do), here are some ideas on things you can do there:
1. Go on a photowalk
You’ll never run out of colourful buildings, flowers and antiques to shoot in Valladolid!
2. Take a dip at a cenote
Beat the heat with a swim at one of the cenotes near the city – we went to one called Zaci.
3. Go souvenir shopping at La Casona de Valladolid
This hotel/restaurant has a wonderful selection of art and decor pieces curated from artists from all over Mexico.
4. Fuel up with a fresh juice at Yerbabuena
This vegetarian joint has a beautiful backyard and makes the perfect stop for a break after a day of walking. Try their chayote juice, it’s delicious.
5. Try Yucatan staple dish “Sopa de Lima”
Once you try this dish, you’ll crave it again and again. It’s hot, sweet, sour, spicy, fragrant… almost impossible to describe! I could have it for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
6. Visit Chitchen Itza
Of course, if you make it to Valladolid you must visit Chitchen Itza! It is only a 45min bus ride. Go early to avoid the crowds.
